Are small business owners maximizing their online exposure? Recent research suggests they are not! And there’s little excuse for it, especially considering the cost of doing business online has decreased dramatically in recent years. When you consider Social Media sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook, and website platforms like WordPress, small business owners today can get a lot of online exposure for nothing more than a small investment of their time.
According to Small Business Consultant, Nathan R Mitchell, small business owners should start to think a bit more like their larger counterparts, especially when it comes to their use of the Web and ecommerce.
An April poll by Newtek Business Services found that nearly half of the business owners surveyed either did not have a web presence or they were unhappy with the site(s) they currently have. But that’s not all! Only 20 to 25 percent of those participating in the survey were taking payments online.
Whether we like it or note, the Internet is an integral part of the Global economy, says Mitchell. Small business owners should not be shying away from it! Rather, they should be embracing online technology and using it to their advantage.
What many business owners don’t realize is that the new economy has really given them the opportunity to compete on a much larger scale, and even take a piece of the pie from larger-scale corporations.
Internationally acclaimed and awarded web and graphic designer, Packy Savvenas of Springfield, MO says, This is a global economy. The key is to get listed, and to present your companys content in an effective, yet attractive way. Your website must work and be easy to use. If you have one already, it would be wise looking into an upgrade, because you have about 15 seconds to make a great first impression when a potential client visits your site. Its purpose should be to present your company well, attract more visitors, and ultimately inform them about your existing products and services.
One thing we do know, is that technology is not slowing down anytime soon. And the longer small business owners wait to get in the online game, the harder it will be for them to be a major player in their respective industry. At the end of the day, its a small investment to be placed & maintained on the World Wide Web.
Fortunately, only 15% of the survey participants admitted to not having a web presence at all, meaning the large majority of business owners at least see some value in the use of the web.
Small business owners must ask themselves, ‘Am I using the web to be best of my ability? In other words, is it optimized for the profitability of my company?’ says Mitchell. If it isn’t, things need to change, and change quickly. If consumers cannot find you online and buy from you online, in a few years you might as well not even exist.
