Veterinary Volunteers Keep Online Journal From American Samoa

Veterinary Ventures, an all volunteer group out of Portland, OR, is spending the month of January in American Samoa providing much needed veterinary care and spay/neuter services to an island nation with a severe pet overpopulation problem and not a single small animal veterinarian. Their weekly journal can be viewed on the AnimalHelp.Com AnimalBlog and chronicles their challenges and triumphs helping the animals of this third world nation.

Prior to Veterinary Ventures departure to American Samoa, AnimalHelp.Com helped to gather donations of much needed veterinary medical equipment and supplies for this non-profit group.

Arriving in American Samoa on December 29th, the 25 volunteers made up of 11 veterinarians, 6 veterinary technicians, 6 animal care assistants, and 2 veterinary pharmacists, faced challenges immediately upon their arrival. In their first AnimalHelp.Com blog entry, Pharmacist Sandy Calves describes After a bit of a slow start to the spay/neuter campaign-we are really cooking. I say we had a slow start because we arrived late on a Thurs night, unloaded and set up our hospital in a government facility on Friday so wed be all set for Monday morning surgeries. But come Monday morn, we were told that the Governor had changed his mind and wed need to find another building for surgeries. Surgery was canceled for that day and we quickly found another building, a local village police hut, which we have now lovingly termed our Surgery Hut. We quickly made home of our new facility and had the hospital set up by about 2pm..ready for surgery to start bright and early Tuesday morning.

That first week, although shorter then they expected, in addition to providing health care check ups and services, the team was able to spay or neuter 150 animals. The team is enthusiastic because their goal for the month was a minimum of 500 surgeries, and they feel confident that they will far exceed this number.

On January 17th, the second blog entry was posted on AnimalHelp.Com by Joi Sutton, DVM, co-founder of Veterinary Ventures. Describing an even more exciting second week, Dr Sutton begins her entry with Well, if ever there is a day when you feel like you made a difference, last Wednesday was one. We got to work to find a family waiting with a stray dog who had had a dead puppy sticking out since the night before. (They didnt know to contact us at night.) You know it is bad when they haul in your patient, feet up, holding onto her by her feet. She was nearly dead.

Dr Sutton describes how they saved this little dogs life. Now, as a vet who has practiced for nearly 13 years Ive smelled some bad smells in my day, but this was foul. The dead pup was stuck and would not budge. In fact, during surgery we found that all of the now dead pups were monsterous. So, we started bolusing this nearly dead stray mama dog fluids, antibiotic, narcotics, etc. We tried to remove the rotting pup but couldnt – had to remove what we could externally and intra-op I pushed the remaining portion of the pup into her uterine body and removed it with the green/grey colored uterus. We ran fluids/hetastarch/etc into her, I was the surgeon and was going as fast as my little hands could sew, and Dr Julie Decaire (our emergency/critical care vet of the team) ran the show. Yes, mama dogs heart stopped halfway during surgery. Yes, it looked bleak. And yes, Dr Julie made a miracle happen. A little CPR. A little magic.

But 2 days post-op, the little dog that they named Princess, developed complications. She did develop a bit of peritonitis and a loop of bowel had adhesed onto her uterine stump. She had fluid building up in her belly and abdominal pain despite some hefty morphine, so we explored her on Friday (2 days post initial surgery). Dr Becky and I gloved in together and took back her stump and ovarian pedicles a bit further, flushed the heck out of her abdomen, and sewed her back up. Her bowel (except the small area where the serosa had adhesed to her stump) looked fabulous. Get this: since we have no suction in our mash unit, our version of abdominal lavage consisted of pouring half a liter into her abdomen and then having 2 big strong Samoan men tilt the table (her head up, her tail down) to drain her belly. We did this six times. Voila! Dog is doing fabulously.

More good news from this second week, the team not only saved little Princess, but was able to perform 30 to 40 spays and neuters each day, and also set up a clinic where volunteers Dr Cindy Zikes and vet tech Ronna Overman are treating the numerous dogs on the island that suffer from TVT. Thats transmissible venereal tumor. A very nasty disease which is treated with a chemotherapy drug called Vincristine.

Multi-Level Marketers Can Do More For Less With A Dynamic New Training System From Matrix Management Group

One of the biggest mistakes new internet business owners make is failing to educate themselves sufficiently about the how to of business on the internet. He hopes that these people will be interested and able to duplicate his system, lets call those people down line. Well what instruction does up line tell down line to help them build a business? What tools does he have in his opportunity to teach down line how to duplicate his abilities?

Levi states that in my experience the answer was always the same. Buy more leads, make more calls ands work harder and youll make more. That is what Mr. up line tells Mr. Down line and in many cases, well intentioned as Mr. Up line is, thats all he says. To me, that was what my boss at my last job used to tell me when he didnt have any answers, Levi adds. Well why any one would want that, when most people already have a job and hear that everyday. Many people start home based businesses for extra money with the hope of getting better answers than that and, one day, getting rid of their boss for good. Thats why I started Levi says. What happens so often is failure so you have people scrambling around looking for the next hot item or the flavor of the month? The internet fad of the month club Levi calls it.

What happens is you have marketers making calls all day and night telling people that mine is better than yours, so quit yours and join mine and youll make money. Then comes the nightly opportunity call where some unknown person, whose the up line of all up lines tells everyone to get out there and sell. High pressure sales and questionable representations about how much money they are going to make if they just let the system do the work. That almost always involves a three way call to better beat down the poor potential customer until he grudgingly takes out his wallet and buys in. Not knowing any better, the new client is given some web page and a duplicate opt in so that now his potential customers can get into the sales page and get sold.

Podango Acquires Gigavox Audio Lite From Gigavox Media

Groundbreaking Photos from China"s Great Wall: The Forgotten Story to Premier in the Bay Area

China’s Great Wall: The Forgotten Story documents the colorful and violent history of the Great Wall through enormous panoramic photographs. This project is a collaborative effort between Jonathan Ball, an Oakland-based photographer, and David Spindler, a historian living in Beijing who focuses on the Great Wall. From September 17 through October 22, Bay Area art enthusiasts and history buffs will have a chance to see this unique installation on display at 3A Gallery in South Park, San Francisco’s artistic South of Market neighborhood.

The photographs depict sites on the Wall where important Mongol and Manchu raids occurred in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, and capture the points of view of defenders or raiders. They were taken on the anniversaries of the raids, as close as possible to the time of day when the fighting happened. Ball made the photographs using a panoramic or a 4×5 camera using conventional film, then stitched the images together digitally. Each photograph stands over three feet tall, and stretches from 9 feet to over 30 feet wide. Spindler unearthed the vivid and colorful details of long-forgotten battle stories from Ming era (1368-1644) documents scattered throughout libraries in China, Taiwan and Japan. These stories are contained in detailed captions of the photographs.

Exhibition images were culled from photographs taken during twenty days of shooting in 2007 and 2008 in nearly as many locations along eastern sections of the Great Wall. “We thought our methodology was the best way to capture a sense of space and time relating to a historical event,” says Spindler. “These photographs put you as close as possible in the modern era to the point of view of people who attacked or defended the Great Wall during these battles–the vegetation is the same, the light is the same, the time of year and even the time of day is the same.”

The exhibition’s highlight is a large, circular installation suspended from the ceiling that features a panoramic photograph inside. “The subject matter demands it–this is the best way we could think of to exhibit a full 360 degree photo,” Ball explains.

Ball and Spindler originally met at Harvard Law School, but shortly after graduation shifted their focus to interests outside of law. They reconnected in Beijing in 2006, and started discussing a collaborative project within the scope of their professional pursuits.

The opening reception is open to the public from 5:30-8:00 p.m. on September 17. There will be a private viewing for the media from 4:00pm to 5:30pm on September 17. Biographies:

Jonathan Ball (born 1972) was first exposed to photography when he was a child, as he watched his father at work in the darkroom he built in the basement of the family’s house. By the time he was eleven, he was making and developing his own photographs.

Over the years, his work has ranged from photojournalism to architectural photography to independent projects. The independent projects include a study of mobile dwellings (photographing factories where mobile homes, RV’s and sailing yachts are made), a series of portraits and interviews of foreigners living in Prague in 1994 (all made in the subject’s home or workplace), photographs made with “cubist” pinhole cameras that he makes (these cameras photograph a subject from many points of view simultaneously), and an ongoing series of images of things and people he sees and experiences in his daily life.

Born and raised in suburban Maryland and educated at Stanford, Ball lives and works in Oakland, California.

David Spindler (born 1967) is one of the world’s leading historians of the Great Wall. In 15 years of research, he has done extensive fieldwork in the Greater Beijing area, while comprehensively researching existing Ming-era texts on the entire Great Wall at Chinese-language library collections worldwide. In addition to a J.D. from Harvard Law School, Spindler holds an A.B. in Asian Studies from Dartmouth and an M.A. in history from Peking University. His article on the “Raid of the Scorned Mongol Woman” will be published this fall in Ming Studies, a scholarly journal. He has been profiled by Peter Hessler in The New Yorker, has appeared on the Today Show, and has been featured in two Discovery Channel documentaries.

Spindler grew up in a suburb of Boston and now lives in Beijing.

Arnold is the author of three technical analyses of Google’s infrastructure. His most recent work published in July 2009 is “Google: The Digital Gutenberg.” This study looks in depth at Google’s potential outside of its classic and traditional search origins. It explains how an individual or organization, developer or innovator can use Google to build a business that “surfs on Google.” Information can be monetized using Google’s infrastructure as “a next generation publishing and monetizing platform.” The reference to Google’s Wave is not an accident, because “Google Wave” is one first of the digital bundling services that Google will deploy.
