BitNami.org Hits 150,000 Downloads, Makes Open Source Apps Even Easier to Install

Alameda, CA (PRWEB) July 8, 2008

San Francisco, CA. July 8, 2008 — BitNami.org, a project dedicated to spreading open source software by making it easier to install and configure, just released a new format for its easy to install open source application stacks – BitNami Modules. The new modular architecture makes it easy to install several applications that share resources such as a database, web server and language runtime. With just a few mouse clicks, even non-technical users can quickly be up and running with applications such as Drupal, WordPress, Dokuwiki, and Mediawiki.

The BitNami project was founded in late 2007 to help spread open source to less technical users, regardless of which operating system they choose to run. The site currently features 18 application stacks, including the Alfresco, KnowledgeTree, eZ Publish, Jooma! and Drupal content management solutions, DokuWiki and MediaWiki, and the phpBB forum software. Several developer/infrastructure stacks are also available, including stacks for Django, Ruby, JRuby and AMP (Apache, MySQL and PHP.) Since launch, BitNami Stacks have been downloaded over 150,000 times from users in over 160 countries.

One of the advantages of BitNami Stacks is that they are completely self-contained and relocatable, so they do not depend on other software being present on the end user’s system. This provides an extremely fast and easy installation process, but may not be ideal for users who want to run several applications on the same server because the user would have one web server, one database and one language runtime installed for each application. BitNami Modules provide a way to install several applications that share resources like a database, web server and language runtime. Just like BitNami Stacks, the Modules can be installed in just a few mouse clicks. Users simply need to download the BitNami Platform and then select the application Modules they’d like to run on top.

“We’re very pleased with the progress we’ve made with the BitNami project over the past several months.” Said Antonio Santos, project administrator for BitNami. “It has been great to see people all over the world participating in our forums and helping to promote the project. The new modular architecture makes BitNami even more useful to our growing community.”

BitNami Stacks and Modules are freely available under the terms of the Apache 2.0 License and can be downloaded from http://www.bitnami.org/stacks.
