BitNami.org Hits 150,000 Downloads, Makes Open Source Apps Even Easier to Install

Alameda, CA (PRWEB) July 8, 2008

San Francisco, CA. July 8, 2008 — BitNami.org, a project dedicated to spreading open source software by making it easier to install and configure, just released a new format for its easy to install open source application stacks – BitNami Modules. The new modular architecture makes it easy to install several applications that share resources such as a database, web server and language runtime. With just a few mouse clicks, even non-technical users can quickly be up and running with applications such as Drupal, WordPress, Dokuwiki, and Mediawiki.

The BitNami project was founded in late 2007 to help spread open source to less technical users, regardless of which operating system they choose to run. The site currently features 18 application stacks, including the Alfresco, KnowledgeTree, eZ Publish, Jooma! and Drupal content management solutions, DokuWiki and MediaWiki, and the phpBB forum software. Several developer/infrastructure stacks are also available, including stacks for Django, Ruby, JRuby and AMP (Apache, MySQL and PHP.) Since launch, BitNami Stacks have been downloaded over 150,000 times from users in over 160 countries.

One of the advantages of BitNami Stacks is that they are completely self-contained and relocatable, so they do not depend on other software being present on the end user’s system. This provides an extremely fast and easy installation process, but may not be ideal for users who want to run several applications on the same server because the user would have one web server, one database and one language runtime installed for each application. BitNami Modules provide a way to install several applications that share resources like a database, web server and language runtime. Just like BitNami Stacks, the Modules can be installed in just a few mouse clicks. Users simply need to download the BitNami Platform and then select the application Modules they’d like to run on top.

“We’re very pleased with the progress we’ve made with the BitNami project over the past several months.” Said Antonio Santos, project administrator for BitNami. “It has been great to see people all over the world participating in our forums and helping to promote the project. The new modular architecture makes BitNami even more useful to our growing community.”

BitNami Stacks and Modules are freely available under the terms of the Apache 2.0 License and can be downloaded from http://www.bitnami.org/stacks.

About BitNami:

BitNami.org is dedicated to increasing the adoption of open source software. Each BitNami Stack contains an open source application and all the software it requires to run, which are wrapped in an easy to use installer. This allows users to get up and running with open source applications for blogging, content management, wikis and more in under five minutes. BitNami Stacks are independent, self-contained and relocatable, making distribution and deployment on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux a snap.

Even the Milkman Blogs

Cape Town, South Africa (PRWEB) March 24, 2006

To counter the negative posts on dairy we see all over the Internet and supply the consumer as well as the dairy industry at large with info – from the perspective of a dairy scientist – Leon the Milkman has put up a blog.

The blog is of course dairy-related and discusses everything from cheese to dairy science calculations and processes.

The idea is to transfer knowledge in a way that is accessible to dairy workers and to the consumer. To get off to a good start Leon is offering a free downloadable dairy dictionary to all that register as a milkfan on either http://www.dairy-info.org or http://www.LeontheMilkman.com.

Leon the Milkman says that he find it quite easy to get new issues to discuss on his blog – he just writes about everything that happens during his workday.

He finds blogs to be the easiest way to get his ideas on the Internet and also likes that he can easily change the template and look of his site, using the WordPress Blog format. This comes in handy with changing seasons or wanting to change the blog’s look for a special holiday, like making everything green for St. Patrick’s Day.

Plugins also abound for blogs and make it easy to add pictures, audio, and other special features to your blog.

Leon finds blogs to be a great way to do generic dairy marketing and says he will welcome input from the dairy industry in this regard. Dairy processors and dairy farmers are welcome to visit Leon the Milkman’s blog and post comments or to contact Leon as this is one of his passions – spreading the good word on dairy.

The dairy industry can feel free to refer consumers to the blog as it has a search function that will answer a lot of common consumer questions on cheese and everything dairy-related.

Well all said and done – Leon the Milkman is happy – and that is all that matters.

“I find it so easy to just sit back at the end of a day and writing something short for the blog – it even helps to get perspective – much like writing in a journal would.” Leon philosophizes, milk in hand.

Yes, he blogs in the evening, because mornings are for fresh milk deliveries of course.
