“We have had so many shifts in our culture that people really don’t know what they can do that’s acceptable and appropriate in terms of business behavior,” says Breil. “Apart from the obvious skills of meeting and greeting people, there’s been such a lack of knowledge about how to handle technology. Cell phones, blackberries, texting and all of the new applications have blurred the lines of what constitutes good business etiquette.”

All of which is complicated by a digital generational divide.

“Our capability to spell is challenged by texting and the shortcuts that are needed for ease of communications,” says Breil. “But that doesn’t change the fact that rude behavior is never acceptable. For example, it’s still a good business practice to turn off your phone or PDA when you’re in a meeting or taking a client to lunch. Even though some of the rules of etiquette have changed, being rude has never been a good relationship builder.”

One of the most impactful programs that Breil leads is the communications workshop developed for top-level executives. Lack of good communication skills is often the cause of misunderstandings that lead to project delays and failures. Breil’s workshop focuses on the key skills that executives need to master to be able to communicate clearly and concisely and avoid the downtime that poor communication causes.

Now, with less than a year to go until he obtains his undergraduate degree, he finds himself realizing that college will have ended up being just for personal development, since DJ-ing will always be his passion.

In perimenopause, many women are deficient in progesterone long before their estrogen levels decrease causing estrogen dominance,” said Dr. Alicia Stanton, Chief Medical Officer of BodyLogicMD. “Progesterone deficiency can be exaggerated by stress, poor diet, and poor sleep habits. That imbalance can cause an environment of estrogen dominance, which could lead to excess breast cell proliferation.”

“Stress management in preventing breast cancer is key. Why does stress affect breast cancer levels?

Produced by the adrenal gland, cortisol production is an automatic physiological response to increased stress of any kind.

“When you need more cortisol, you take away from progesterone. Progesterone is important in balancing estrogen. We look at estrogen and progesterone balance to help patients have less of a risk of breast cancer by reducing stress levels,” said Stanton.

Stress management techniques can also be effective in helping to stop production of cortisol in the body.

“Aside from stress reduction as it relates to breast cancer, I often discuss lifestyle management with my patients – everything from increased exercise to time management,” said Dr. Stanton. “It’s important for patients to recognize how stress negatively effects the body and what they can do to stop that from happening.”

Retail Development Underway at Point Ruston Waterfront


Tacoma, Wash. (Vocus) October 9, 2008

Construction of Point Ruston, a 97-acre mixed use neighborhood on the shores of the Puget Sound, is underway. With a retail core of approximately 120,000 square feet, this open air, waterfront lifestyle center will feature views of Mount Rainier, the Cascade Foothills and Olympic Mountains.

In addition to retail, plans call for 100,000 to 125,000 square feet of Class A office space and 1,000 condominiums, town homes and apartments. The approximate value of the development is $ 1.2 billion.

“Our low bank waterfront location and stunning mountain views will help make Point Ruston a popular Northwest destination,” says Mike Cohen, managing partner of developer Point Ruston LLC. “Area demographics, coupled with Tacoma’s growing popularity as a regional draw, will bolster our ability to bring high quality retail and restaurants to the neighborhood.”

Cohen has retained the services of Colliers International for leasing activities at Point Ruston. The first phase of construction offers nearly 20,000 square feet of retail and commercial space with occupancy targeted in fall 2009.

Point Ruston has secured a formal commitment from Silver Cloud Inns and Hotels to operate a four-star, destination hotel at the waterfront community. Silver Cloud, based in Bellevue, Wash., operates 10 hotels in Washington and Oregon. The 150-room Point Ruston Silver Cloud Hotel will feature an upscale restaurant, lounge and conference facilities.

Cohen expects to start construction of several more neighborhood commercial and retail buildings in late 2009, including the hotel. About 80,000 square feet of restaurant, retail and commercial space is slated for occupancy in 2011, coinciding with Silver Cloud’s debut.

Groundbreaking of the first mixed-use building last April marked the first construction activity on the waterfront property since plans for redevelopment were first envisioned in the early 1990s. Developer Point Ruston LLC is currently placing the foundation for the first mixed-use building at the Built Green community, located at a former industrial site along Commencement Bay.

The 97-acre site is located next to Point Defiance Park, Zoo & Aquarium and the Tacoma Yacht Club. The development area is in two separate jurisdictions, the City of Tacoma and the Town of Ruston.

Point Ruston’s master plans include approximately 50 acres of publicly accessible areas and open spaces, including view corridors, pedestrian and vehicle access, recreational facilities, park areas, public art and a mile-long “Waterwalk.” This pedestrian path, encompassing more than 10 acres and averaging 100-plus feet in width, will complete the link between 702-acre Point Defiance Park and Ruston Way’s popular promenade and restaurant row.

Perfect Search’s forthcoming product will be a GSA add-on to enhance the GSA search and capacity.

“As one example, we have a customer that has over 10,000 databases of both structured and unstructured content and over 1.2 billion records. We were able to provide them with an economical solution that allows them to query all of their records on a single server,” Ebert explained.

These customers are Perfect Search’s targets in 2009.

“Our very first market niche will be GSA customers who need to index and query large databases,” Ebert said. He said the company will launch a second GSA add-on appliance to augment e-mail search later in 2009.

Perfect Search is hitching its wagon to Google because the search giant’s brand, simplicity, and overall economic sense will draw customers. By offering to leverage Google’s strengths, Perfect Search can benefit.

“Perfect Search delivers excellent content processing and query processing speed without the hardware imposing the often onerous server requirements needed to make certain data management systems usable,” Arnold said in his analysis of the company’s products.

Google isn’t Perfect Search’s only target for enhancement. Industry focus on mobile search has also drawn its attention. The company recently released a Microsoft Windows Mobile device search they believe is unique in the marketplace.

“We index and query all of the content stored locally on the mobile device, including the content of the memory card,” Ebert said. “Both indexing and query processing are so fast, that very little computational demand is placed on the device, avoiding power-drain on the limited battery capacity.”

According to Ebert, no major mobile manufacturer or OS provider offers an indexed search product, and some mobile platforms don’t offer search at all. Perfect Search is in the process of adapting its mobile search to the iPhone, Symbian and Google Android platforms.

“We think our GSA add-on product is well positioned to piggy back on Google’s success in this market, and we don’t see Microsoft competing in this arena in the near future,” Ebert said.

Perfect Search’s key performance differentiator, whether on internal servers or mobile devices, is the ability to handle massive data sets and our speed.

“We have a current customer that has over one billion records of both structured and unstructured content that we have been able to search on a single low end server. This single server replaced seven servers that they were previously using for query processing.”

Ebert said the company has also made improvements in the indexing process and query speed to offer large amounts of throughput per server. This significantly reduces the amount of hardware required to handle large query volume.

Dr. Brandemihl said that, “Stress may often trigger anxiety. Anxious people may find themselves worrying excessively, not sleeping well, and feeling tense, on edge, distractible and irritable. Life stressors may also lead to symptoms of depression including sadness, crying spells, and lack of pleasure in life. Depression can sometimes trigger sleep and appetite disturbances as well as feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness or even suicidal thoughts.”

“There are several things you can do proactively to prevent depression and anxiety from developing or worsening,” said Dr Brandemihl. “Some techniques are very easy to implement.”

1. Maintain a regular sleep schedule. Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time. Avoid naps longer than thirty minutes as they may disrupt your nighttime sleep.

2. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and get thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise three times a week through something as simple as walking. The malls can be a good place to walk on cold, winter days.

3. Journal or blog to have an outlet for your feelings or emotions. You can even throw the paper away when you’re done writing if you are a private person. The important aspect is having an outlet for the feelings.

4. If you are unemployed (or even if you are not) find somewhere to volunteer between interviews and searching. This helps your self esteem and also helps to maintain some structure and purpose in your life.

5. Participate in religious or spiritual practices, preferably with others, to foster a sense of fellowship and hope.

6. Communicate to your family and friends that you are feeling “sad”, “stressed” or “anxious” so they can reach out a helping hand. If family or friends are not around consider a support group either online or in person.

7. Refrain from drug and alcohol use as this can exacerbate or cause depression and anxiety. Also avoid excessive amounts of caffeine as it can contribute to anxiety.

8. Find a new hobby or interest that involves socialization to help foster new relationships.

9. Adopt a pet (only if you are able to care for it). Their unconditional love and daily needs provide reassurance and structure to your life.

10. Consult a mental health professional when in doubt! Meet with a psychiatrist and a therapist.

It has become more common and socially acceptable to utilize mental health services. Dr Brandemihl said, “No matter how hard some people try to stay positive and be proactive they still may feel depressed and anxious. These people may have a chemical imbalance that requires psychiatric medication, but only a physician, or preferably a board certified psychiatrist, can determine that.”
