WooThemes, one of the largest theme and infrastructure providers for WordPress sites, today announced that the company has acquired the FlexSlider jQuery library. The acquisition is part of a broader strategy to bring under one roof a suite of products that offer complete end-to-end WordPress development, and further solidify WooThemes as a true platform for the best sites in the world.
Importantly, the beautiful jQuery slider plugin will remain free and open source, and creator Tyler Smith will continue to maintain, support and upgrade the current library. With FlexSlider, both true beginners and seasoned developers can create a fully responsive slider for their responsive designs in three simple steps.
We have been using FlexSlider in many of our products, and have absolutely fallen in love with it, said WooThemes co-founder Adii Pienaar. Not only that, we think that FlexSlider is strategic to our vision of WooThemes as the platform of choice for everything WordPress. Responsive Web design can be complicated, and with FlexSlider, Tyler un-complicated it. The plugin will remain free and open source so that anyone and everyone can help us improve even more. This is just as much about long-term stability for FlexSlider as it is about what WooThemes can do with it.
WooThemes, founded over 4 years ago, has amassed 75,000 paying customers, and its free themes have been downloaded more than 1.3 million times. WordPress itself currently powers 22% of all websites in the US.
WooThemes specifically chose FlexSlider over other alternatives based on the ease of implementation due to the simple and semantic markup, and the fully responsive functionality. FlexSlider is also very compatible with other libraries and easy to use across all environments. Competing plugins include Slides, Nivo Slider and wmvSlider.
FlexSlider is special. We are really focused on new products that extend not only our themes, but any WordPress installation, no matter where it resides, or how it originated, said Magnus Jepson, co-founder of WooThemes. Seamless integration between themes and plugins sounds great, but it is non-trivial in practice, and makes a huge difference for WordPress developers new and old. And at WooThemes generally, were officially on a mission now to claim more and more real estate in the average WP stack. Were not just growing our own product base, were adding everything thats been missing along the way. We want to be the dream WP stack. WooCommerce was a huge step in the right direction, and now were thrilled to offer even more with FlexSlider.
The open and extensible nature of FlexSlider also provides the WooThemes team and community a chance to further enhance the project ongoing. FlexSlider was developed under the MIT free software license, which allows for reuse in proprietary software. The WooThemes team is currently working on the next version with Smith, which will include a number of optimizations and new features, and will continue to maintain and update FlexSlider on its GitHub project page.
WooThemes is also working on a Woo-agnostic version of FlexSlider for easy integration into any installation.
FlexSlider is available for download today. More information on FlexSlider can be found at http://woothemes.com/flexslider.
