Why Bay Area Men Join TNT to Run in the San Francisco Nike Womens Marathon

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 15, 2012

The San Francisco Nike Womens Marathon is not just for women. Although the majority of the 20,000 runners who participate every year are female, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Societys (LLS) Team In Training (TNT) the largest Bay Area marathon training and charity program says there are several reasons why many of its male athletes join the event.

This is the 9th year of the Nike Womens Marathon and we have a number of men who join Team In Training to complete this woman-focused event, said Leah Schilling of LLS. The weekend is full of female friendly fun, but we found out there are so many other reasons why men enjoy the event, too.

On October 14, 2012, over 4,000 TNT athletes from across the country are expected to join the thousands of participants who run in the popular San Francisco marathon. Most of those will be women, lured by perks like the ladies night kick off celebration, mani-pedi bar at the Expotique and Tiffany finisher necklace.

So, why doesnt the female friendly nature of the race keep male Bay Area TNT members like All-Bay walk team Mentor Dennis Ainslie, Marina/Marin marathon team participant Bob Gibson, and Diablo Valley marathon Mentor Ben Chaffin from participating?

TNT took the time to find out, and compiled a list of 10 reasons these men were inspired to sign up, which range from heartfelt to completely hilarious. To tighten the bond my wife and I made with our TNT teammates from last year, said one participant. Another joked, Hello, over 18,000 women and me? Im married, but not blind!

The most important reason the men gave: Being able to run in a sea of TNT purple, knowing they are playing a big part in finding a cure for blood cancer. The entire list can be found on the LLS Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter blog, Truly Relentless, at http://trulyrelentless.wordpress.com/2012/07/13/the-men-of-nike/.

These men show that they run or walk for a much bigger reason than being outnumbered by thousands of women, said Schilling. They train selflessly in honor of those they love and to help blood cancer patients lead better lives and it certainly doesnt bother them if they do it while wearing pink.

The Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of TNT invites all athletes, both men and women, to sign up with them today for guaranteed entry into the San Francisco Nike Womens Marathon and Half-Marathon. For more information, visit http://www.teamintraining.org/firsttimehere/sportprograms/destinations/nikewm/.

Team In Training has a program for athletes of all skill levels. Theres a wide range of events including half, full and ultra marathons; hike adventures; triathlons; and cycling events. Visit teamintraining.org/sf or call 800.78.TRAIN to talk to a local Team Manager.

Stay up to date with Team In Training: like TNT SF Bay Area on Facebook, follow @TNT_SFBayArea on Twitter, or find them on Pinterest.

About Team In Training

Team In Training (TNT) San Francisco chapter offers marathon training, half-marathon training, and triathlon training. Individuals can also train for cycling events and adventure hikes. TNT began in 1988, when Bruce Cleland of Rye, NY formed a team that raised funds and trained to run the New York City Marathon in honor of Cleland’s daughter Georgia, a leukemia survivor.

The team of 38 runners raised $ 322,000 for LLS’s Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter. Because of the pioneering efforts of Cleland and the Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter, Team In Training was born and has grown into the world’s largest endurance sports training program. Cleland was honored by Runner’s World magazine in 2004 as one of their “Heroes of Running” for his role in establishing TNT.

Whether participants choose The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s traditional Team In Training program or TNT Flex, a flexible, customized online training option developed by TNT’s renowned coaches, they get all the support they need to cross the finish line at the marathon, half marathon, triathlon, century ride and hike adventure of their choice. Both offer a choice of world-class events, travel arrangements to an exciting destination, and a fabulous, activity-filled weekend once they’re there.

About The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), headquartered in White Plains, NY, with 68 chapters in the United States and Canada, is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $ 750 million in research specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
