Study Reveals that 69% of Mobile Phone Users Take Them Everywhere

Perth, Western Australia (PRWEB) August 21, 2012

Recently, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) presented a study to a group of industry insiders. The study was entitled, Mobiles Role in a Consumers Media Days: Smartphones and Tablets Enable Seamless Digital Lives. The study covered personal habits of the average consumer and how mobile phones impact their daily lives. Most attendees agreed, though, that the study holds far-reaching implications for businesses, both now and in the future.

The study was performed on 50% men and 50% women, and broken into age groups starting at 18-29 and finishing at 65 and older. The research was also split evenly between tablet and smartphone users. The study drew some conclusions which provide great insight into possible business strategies from here forward.

The most surprising finding was that 70% of tablet users use their tablets primarily for entertainment, while a near-equal 69% of smartphone users see them as an essential part of their lives, and say they never leave home without it. While smartphone users keep them on their person all of the time, 91% of smartphone users in the study report that they use their smartphones primarily at home, along with 97% of tablet users.

The study also showed that the time of day and the location makes a difference. Most report that they are most likely to use mobile devices during down time at home. While smartphone use is more common, users are more easily engaged on tablets. Users also use smartphones simultaneously with other activities, such as watching TV or reading newspapers, books, or magazines. Approximately a quarter of those who use smartphones and tablets report that it is changing how much they watch TV or read printed media.

30% said they spend $ 20 or more on their smartphone every month, but 46% said they spend the same amount on their tablets.

So, how does this all fit together and what does it mean to business owners and the general public? According to Kirk OConnor, Director of Development for Spanky Media, First and foremost, smartphones and tablets are changing the way business is done. As more and more people purchase and use smartphones and tablets, we are seeing a virtual migration of shoppers to mobile devices.

OConnor continued: Think about it. Thirty years ago, most shopping was done by going to bricks and mortar stores, with a reasonable but small percentage done by mail order. Ten years ago, the Internet made a huge impact, and a lot of bricks and mortar operations, including giants like Borders Books, went out of business. And now, just when it seems like most businesses are comfortable on the Internet, the smartphone is changing the game again.

When OConnor was asked how smartphone use is changing the game, he answered, In this era, businesses have no choice but to make it more convenient for smartphone users to do business with them. From the local restaurant to the multi-million dollar retailer, any business that doesnt optimise their website for mobile phone use is leaving money on the table. On the other hand, smartphones and tablets represent a great opportunity for businesses to reach more customers.

Prior to the re-launch of the website, TwinState was burdened with an extremely basic website, without any CMS (Content Management System) capabilities whatsoever. In order for them to make changes and/or updates to the website, they were required to undertake the cumbersome process doing the coding manually through Dreamweaver, a website editing tool. This severely tied down their efficiency in getting updated news and marketing communications out to clients and visitors on their website.

The web development team at Dotcomweavers was able to convert the old, static TwinState website into a fully functional, dynamic website built using WordPress as the CMS.
