New study: Perfect Search can help Search and Organize huge Amounts of data

Louisville, Ky. (PRWEB) October 26, 2009

The Beyond Search team at Arnold Information Technology is releasing a white paper titled “Solving Search Problems with Perfect Search.” The study addresses how enterprise companies are struggling to search and organize huge amounts of data and how Perfect Search can help. Perfect Search, http://www.perfectsearchcorp.com/, software uses semantic technology and allows clients to index and search massive data sets with near real-time incremental indexing at high speeds without latency.

The paper sets the stage by explaining that the world is awash in data stored in a wide variety of sources. Workers face a grim reality: huge amounts of data, limited access options, and uncontrollable costs related to information location. The answer is proposed in the form of the new Perfect Search Vortex system.

“Perfect Search delivers excellent content processing and query processing speed without the hardware imposing the often onerous server requirements needed to make certain data management systems usable,” Stephen E. Arnold, president of Arnold Information Technology and Beyond Search team leader, said.

Keyword search has been the high-water mark in search and retrieval. But ambiguity can return so many results that the search is essentially useless. The solution indicated is a more organized “federated” search. Federating systems send queries to other systems to save time and bother of sending a query to multiple systems one at a time. Perfect Search and its Vortex system are taking federation one step further: Vortex processes content at high speed from multiple sources and creates a single, optimized index using very little hardware and low power consumption.

The paper outlines how Vortex processes huge volumes of data and indexes content, ideas and meaning to “spin” results that precisely match the user’s information need. The system then “unwraps” the bundles of information and delivers a relevant, on-target information answer. Vortex runs so efficiently that one or two servers can do the work of six or eight servers in equivalent vendor systems.

Also included are explanations of Perfect Search’s Vortex infrastructure, power consumption, latency, performance under pressure, and heavily customized functions. Detailed charts and graphics support the data.

The white paper is available at http://arnoldit.com/files/perfect-search-white-paper.pdf. This special report was commissioned by Perfect Search in August 2009 and is the work of the Beyond Search team: Jessica Bratcher, Donald Anderson, Anthony Safina, Stuart Schram IV, and Stephen E. Arnold. Profiles of Perfect Search technology programs are at http://www.perfectsearchcorp.com/technology-benefits. Annual "Evvie" for Excellence in Search Engine Study Papers Awarded

Boston, Mass. (PRWEB) May 2, 2010

Stephen E. Arnold of ArnoldIT.com, http://www.arnoldit.com, announced the Evvie “best paper award” for 2010 at Infonortics’ Boston Search Engine Meeting on April 26-27.

The Evvie Award went to Dr. David R. Milward of Linguamatics, http://www.linguamatics.com/, for “From Document Search to Knowledge Discovery: Changing the Paradigm.” Milward received a recognition award and a check for $ 500.

The paper presented covered using agile text mining to provide decision-makers directly with answers rather than searching sets of documents, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. The program outlined “how an agile NLPbased approach for discovering facts and relationships from free text can be used to leverage scientific knowledge and move beyond search to automated profiling and hypothesis generation from millions of documents in real time.”

Milward has 20 years experience of product development, consultancy and research in natural language processing. He is a co-founder of Linguamatics and designed the I2E text mining system which uses a novel interactive approach to information extraction. He has been involved in applying text mining to applications in the life sciences for the last 10 years, initially as a senior computer scientist at SRI International. David has a PhD from the University of Cambridge and was a researcher and lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He is widely published in the areas of information extraction, spoken dialogue, parsing, syntax and semantics.

The Evvie is given in honor of Ev Brenner, one of the leaders in online information systems and functions. The award was established after Brenner’s death in 2006. Brenner served on the program committee for the Boston Search Engine Meeting since its inception almost 20 years ago. He had two characteristics that made his participation a signature feature of each year’s program: He was willing to tell a speaker or paper author to “add more content,” and after a presentation, he would ask a presenter one or more penetrating questions that helped make a complex subject more clear.

This year’s Evvie was sponsored by Exalead. Arnold and ArnoldIT.com provide the trophy to keep Brenner’s push for excellence squarely in the minds of the speakers and the conference attendees. Presenting this years award was Eric Rogge, Exalead, and Liz Diamond, niece of Ev Brenner. The judges for the 2010 Evvie were Dr. David Evans (Evans Research), Sue Feldman (IDC), and Jill ONeill, NFAIS.

Want to Knock a Competing Business Off of Google? A New Study Shows that $45 May be All it Takes

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) June 24, 2012

TastyPlacement, an Austin-based search engine optimization firm, recently released a study that highlights the potential for businesses to negatively impact the search engine positions of competitors through the purchase of inexpensive spam links.

Negative SEO (search engine optimization) has emerged recently as a malicious technique employed by businesses that seeks to harm the Google search rankings of a competitor’s website. The principal method employed by practitioners of negative SEO is to purchase hypertext links from poor quality websites and direct those links to point to a competitor’s website. While digital marketing practitioners disagree on the effectiveness of negative SEO, the theory underlying the practice is that Google’s ranking algorithm interprets the low-quality links as an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings and responds by punishing the target website by lowering its ranking position.

Specifically, the study began with a sample website that enjoyed consistent favorable search rankings for a popular search term. Operators then purchased over 50,000 “spam” website links through online forums and from practitioners of negative SEO techniques over the course of several weeks in May of 2012. The total cost of the purchased links was $ 45. The operators then monitored the search engine ranking position of the target website over the course of the study.

The results revealed a drop in ranking position for the test website’s principal search phrase from position 3 to position 14 in Google search results within the 30 days covered by the study.

Michael David, who conducted the study, noted, “We only tested one website, but the short period of time and the correlation between the dates we got the links and the dates the website moved lower in search results seems pretty clear to us that negative SEO is very real, and is likely to become very popular as a result.”

An infographic covering the study, as well as a detailed methodology, are available here: http://www.tastyplacement.com/infographic-testing-negative-seo

Study Reveals that 69% of Mobile Phone Users Take Them Everywhere

Perth, Western Australia (PRWEB) August 21, 2012

Recently, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) presented a study to a group of industry insiders. The study was entitled, Mobiles Role in a Consumers Media Days: Smartphones and Tablets Enable Seamless Digital Lives. The study covered personal habits of the average consumer and how mobile phones impact their daily lives. Most attendees agreed, though, that the study holds far-reaching implications for businesses, both now and in the future.

The study was performed on 50% men and 50% women, and broken into age groups starting at 18-29 and finishing at 65 and older. The research was also split evenly between tablet and smartphone users. The study drew some conclusions which provide great insight into possible business strategies from here forward.

The most surprising finding was that 70% of tablet users use their tablets primarily for entertainment, while a near-equal 69% of smartphone users see them as an essential part of their lives, and say they never leave home without it. While smartphone users keep them on their person all of the time, 91% of smartphone users in the study report that they use their smartphones primarily at home, along with 97% of tablet users.

The study also showed that the time of day and the location makes a difference. Most report that they are most likely to use mobile devices during down time at home. While smartphone use is more common, users are more easily engaged on tablets. Users also use smartphones simultaneously with other activities, such as watching TV or reading newspapers, books, or magazines. Approximately a quarter of those who use smartphones and tablets report that it is changing how much they watch TV or read printed media.

30% said they spend $ 20 or more on their smartphone every month, but 46% said they spend the same amount on their tablets.

So, how does this all fit together and what does it mean to business owners and the general public? According to Kirk OConnor, Director of Development for Spanky Media, First and foremost, smartphones and tablets are changing the way business is done. As more and more people purchase and use smartphones and tablets, we are seeing a virtual migration of shoppers to mobile devices.

OConnor continued: Think about it. Thirty years ago, most shopping was done by going to bricks and mortar stores, with a reasonable but small percentage done by mail order. Ten years ago, the Internet made a huge impact, and a lot of bricks and mortar operations, including giants like Borders Books, went out of business. And now, just when it seems like most businesses are comfortable on the Internet, the smartphone is changing the game again.

When OConnor was asked how smartphone use is changing the game, he answered, In this era, businesses have no choice but to make it more convenient for smartphone users to do business with them. From the local restaurant to the multi-million dollar retailer, any business that doesnt optimise their website for mobile phone use is leaving money on the table. On the other hand, smartphones and tablets represent a great opportunity for businesses to reach more customers.

Case Study to Consider Before Posting Blogs

Wilmington, MA (PRWEB) November 16, 2005

Blogs are quickly making their way into mainstream consumer companies. Once the domain of high tech businesses and political websites, blogs are now commonplace on the web. Some consumer products companies that are using blogs to communicate with their customers include GM, Stonyfield Farms, and Ice.com

One recent estimate suggests that 80,000 blogs are created every day. Blogs can be used for many reasons including announcing new products or sales, creating an ongoing conversation with customers, posting the thoughts of the company’s CEO, or even creating buzz with controversial postings. While businesses can use blogs as a way to enhance their brand, they need to do so carefully. Even though blogs can be created in less than 5 minutes, a great deal of thought needs to be given to them, more than might seem necessary at first glance. My companys experience with creating a blog can hopefully serve others well.

With all the talk recently about blogs, we wanted to position our flower company, Beyond Blossoms (http://www.beyondblossoms.com), as on the cutting edge as more than just another place to buy flowers. We wanted to start a blog to serve as a place to provide unusual and interesting information about all things floral, from flower gardening tips to art exhibits featuring flowers, to fun facts about flowers. It would be a way to interact with customers and hopefully provide content they find informative, useful, and even funny.

We initially thought that getting the blog up and running would be easy, but it quickly became apparent that there were many issues to be thought out. Some of these included whether or not to encase the blog within our existing website or create a separate domain to house it, who would write the flower blog, and what to talk about. Additionally, the company wrestled with what blog platform to use such as Blogger, pMachine, Typepad, or WordPress. Ultimately, we decided to bring in a consultant to assist us in the design and development of the blog, blogging expert Paul Chaney, from internet marketing firm Radiant Marketing Group (http://www.radiantmarketinggroup.com). Besides designing the blog to fit in with the existing template of the business using WordPress, Paul also helped generate awareness by publicizing the flower blog on various blog search engines such as Technorati and creating a press release to announce it. He also contacted webmasters of other blogs who share similar themes to ours to include a link to us in their blogroll.

What to write about was a hot topic of conversation in our company. We decided that the blog should not be a blatant sales pitch with its only purpose being to advertise the company. The flower blog would serve to communicate our company’s love for flowers and deepen our brand’s connection with customers. The more interesting content we can provide, the more enjoyable our site will become to visitors, and this should help convert some visitors into buyers.

Ideally a blog should fit in with the brand personality of the rest of the company. If our website was dull, then readers might not understand the blogs purpose or context, but because the website is lighthearted in tone, we can write about a wide variety of topics on the blog. Recent posts include ones about a new computer game about flowers, Englands effort to improve public bathrooms with fresh flowers, how to plant fall flowers, and rare orchids found in Idaho. Do not underestimate the resources needed for blogging. Posting on a daily basis takes a significant time commitment.

We looked to other companies as examples of how to use a blog that fits in with the brand. Stonyfield Farms (http://www.stonyfieldfarms.com/weblog/) features 4 blogs to talk about topics that don’t directly relate to its core yogurt product, such as “Baby Babble, a blog for parents to talk about their babies and “Strong Women Daily News.” Here, the company is using its brand position as an environmentally responsible company to entice its customers to share in other “responsible” areas such as parenting.

The NBA blog (http://www.nba.com/blog/) is an example we learned from to try to avoid. Its purpose is to provide a varied collection of insiders, media members and fans from around the world who will share their thoughts about the NBA, WNBA, and whatever else comes to mind. The problem here is a lack of consistency. Posts seem to be put up on a random basis so you dont know when to come back to read another one. For example, the blog posted on August 26 and then did not have another post until October 18! Why would any visitor keep visiting the site to read the blog if nothing new is posted on a timely basis? Furthermore, some NBA players have recently posted their journals, but there is no signal as to when, if ever, the same or any other player will post another journal entry. Finally, the topics and writers are all over the board from a writer in France to Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to posts about the WNBA. It all leads to a poor customer experience.

GM and Ice.com both write blogs which have garnered media attention and a ton of buzz. GM has generated a cult like following for Vice Chairman Bob Lutz’s weekly controversial observations about the auto industry (http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/). Ice.com has 3 blogs, 2 of which are not hosted on the main website itself. Each blog is consistent and clear in its purpose. The company can accomplish various goals in different settings showing Ice.coms recent press coverage, a tongue in cheek look at celebrity jewelry, and tips from a jewelry expert (http://blog.ice.com/, http://www.sparklelikethestars.com/, and http://www.justaskleslie.com/).

However blogs are utilized, a little extra thought behind it can enhance a brand. Through continually posting new content, customers leaving comments, and the viral nature of blogs, visiting your website can become a “must-see” daily activity for your customers.

Josh Grossman is cofounder of online florist Beyond Blossoms (http://www.beyondblossoms.com). The company’s mission is to send flowers fresh from the farms at low prices and with great designs.

Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Study Finds Metal Ions Trigger Painful Immune Reaction, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports

New York, New York (PRWEB) October 22, 2012

Researchers at the University of New Castle in the U.K. may have discovered the reason behind the pain and suffering experienced by some recipients of metal-on-metal hip implants, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to a report from The Northern Echo, researchers there have determined that the shedding of metal ions from metal-on-metal hip implants may be mistaken by the immune system for bacteria. As such, the immune system triggers a component called Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which results in a secretion of chemicals that can cause inflammatory lesions pseudo tumors – around the joint. Writing in the Annals of Rheumatology Research, the New Castle University scientists asserted that the findings provide the first explanation for the chronic inflammation and tissue damage that is seen in some patients with failed metal-on-metal hip implants.*

This is just the most recent study to confirm the significant risks associated with metal-on-metal hip replacements, says Bernstein Liebhard, a nationwide law firm representing clients who sustained injuries from a variety of metal-on-metal hip systems. The Firm is currently offering free and confidential lawsuit reviews to individuals who suffered serious complications, including metal poisoning, due to metal-on-metal hip implants.

Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Dangers

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is currently reviewing the safety of metal-on-metal hip implants. According to the agency, metal particles shed by such devices can result in an adverse local tissue reaction that causes damage to bone and/or tissue surrounding the implant and joint. As a result, the implant can become loose or cause pain, leading to revision surgery. There are also some case reports in the literature of patients in which high levels of metal ions in the bloodstream may have caused other types of symptoms or illnesses elsewhere in the body, including effects on the heart, nervous system, and thyroid gland, according to the FDA.**

Individuals who experienced metal-on-metal hip problems may file lawsuits against the devices manufacturers to seek compensation for their injuries. The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are actively filing cases involving the DePuy ASR hip implant and the metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip system. The firm is also investigating cases concerning the Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant, as well as Wright Profemur and Conserve metal hip implants. In addition, Bernstein Liebhard LLP is closely following developments of the June 2012 Smith & Nephew metal liner recall and the July 2012 Stryker recall of its Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck hip stems.

Bernstein Liebhard LLP is offering free lawsuit consultations to anyone injured as a result of a metal-on-metal hip replacement device. Individuals who have endured hip implant failures, metallosis, pain, or revision surgery due to one of these devices may be entitled to compensation for their medical care, pain and suffering, and other damages. A wealth of information about metal-on-metal hip implant lawsuits is available at Bernstein Liebhards website http://www.consumerinjurylawyers.com/ , or by calling one of our attorneys at 1-877-779-1414 today.

New Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Study Emphasizes Importance of Patients Symptoms in Evaluating the Need for Hip Replacement Revisions, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports

New York, New York (PRWEB) December 25, 2012

Researchers in the U.K. are urging doctors to consider patient symptoms when determining whether or not to perform metal-on-metal hip implant revision surgery, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to a report from Orthopedics Today Europe, researchers with Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil found that while MRI and ultrasound are useful in screening metal-on-metal hip replacements, there are a significant percentage of hips which have failed with negative radiology findings. Their findings were presented at the British Orthopaedic Association Congress this past September.*

This research confirms what we have seen with some of our clientsthat pain could signal device failure, says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients who sustained injuries from a variety of metal-on-metal hip systems. The firm is currently offering free and confidential lawsuit reviews to individuals who suffered serious complications, including metal poisoning, due to all-metal hips.

This latest study retrospectively examined imaging results from 25 hips (16 patients) between March 2011 and May 2012. Out of that group, 23 hips had ultrasound scans and 21 had also undergone MRI scans preoperatively. During revision surgery, multiple tissue samples were retrieved from the area surrounding the artificial joint. Four patients had both negative MRI and ultrasound results, but were still revised due to pain and were found to have histopathology positive metallosis. One patient had a positive ultrasound and negative MRI result; similarly, one patient had a positive MRI with a normal ultrasound, according to the research team.

Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Lawsuits

Victims of metal-on-metal hip implant complications may file lawsuits against the devices manufacturers to seek compensation for their injuries. The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are actively filing lawsuits in the multidistrict litigation established in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio, for claims involving the DePuy ASR hip implant (MDL No. 2197). The firm is also involved in the federal litigation underway in the Northern District of Texas concerning the metal-on-metal DePuy Pinnacle hip device (MDL No. 2244). The firm is also closely following developments in the July 2012 Stryker Rejuvenate recall, and the June 2012 Smith & Nephew metal liner recall. Bernstein Liebhard LLP also continues to investigate cases concerning the Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant, as well as Wright Profemur and Conserve metal hip implants.

According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), metal particles shed by metal-on-metal hip implants may result in an adverse local tissue reaction that has the potential to cause damage to bone and/or tissue surrounding the implant and joint. According to the agency, there are also some case reports in the literature of patients in which high levels of metal ions in the bloodstream may have caused other types of symptoms or illnesses elsewhere in the body, including effects on the heart, nervous system, and thyroid gland. In May 2011, the FDA issued orders for postmarket surveillance studies to manufacturers of metal-on-metal hip systems. The agency believes these studies will enable it to better understand all-metal hip implants and their safety profiles related to metal ion concentrations in the bloodstream. **
