He has been involved in applying text mining to applications in the life sciences for the last 10 years, initially as a senior computer scientist at SRI International. David has a PhD from the University of Cambridge and was a researcher and lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He is widely published in the areas of information extraction, spoken dialogue, parsing, syntax and semantics.

The Evvie is given in honor of Ev Brenner, one of the leaders in online information systems and functions. The award was established after Brenner’s death in 2006. Brenner served on the program committee for the Boston Search Engine Meeting since its inception almost 20 years ago.
