Local Benicia Businesses Team Up for Second Annual Honey and Cheese Pairing Evening

Benicia, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) May 11, 2011

Benicias beloved Honey and Cheese Pairing Festival is an annual fundraising event where participants get to sample the finest local cheeses and honey for a good cause. This years festival will be held on Saturday, May 14th from 6 to 9pm under the shared new roof of Shirocos and Piccolo, two downtown stores that recently moved to 216 First Street, along Benicias beautiful waterfront. Tickets are $ 25 and can be purchased at the stores or online via http://ArsenalSwim.com. Donations for the tickets and all funds collected through a silent auction and other activities during the evening will be used to help support Benicias James Lemos Community Pool to keep the pool and its swim programs afloat.

The times are very challenging, noted Shirocos owner Erick Martinez. And we know this is going to be important to get this great program some badly needed funds.

The more than 200 expected participants will be provided a complimentary glass of wine and be able to bid on silent auction items. Several honey and cheese purveyors have already committed to bring their goods, so it is expected that everyone will be able to try some dynamic new combinations of sweet and savory local pleasures. Two honey companies have already indicated that they expect to harvest a few gallons of the sweet treasure right in Benicia in the days before the event, giving participants the freshest honey theyve ever tried. Music and other surprises will be offered as well. The event is restricted to people over 21.

We will be making pairing suggestions for the delicious honeys and cheeses we have coming, said Shirocos partner and local foods enthusiast Allan Shore. But one of the best aspects of this event is that people get to experiment with their own combinations. Many people dont realize the culinary potential of these simple and delicious gifts of nature.

The first honey and cheese pairing event in 2009 was a great success, and raised several thousand dollars for the Benicia Education Foundation. Since its first year, the event has had a major impact on Shore and Martinez. They have used the experience to collaborate on a book called Green Gold: Pairing the Worlds Honeys & Cheeses. It is the first publication of its kind, and will be available for purchase at the event. A portion of proceeds from book sales will be used to help the James Lemos Community Pool as well.

Shirocos features local, regional and national home and gourmet items to showcase area talents and the affordability of ideas from across the globe. Piccolo is one of Benicias finest and most contemporary womens clothing boutiques. By joining forces, Piccolo and Shirocos believe they are developing a new kind of anchor store for small towns. Both businesses are active proponents of local shopping and community involvement projects. The stores are open every day at 10am and stay open until about 7pm (or later) most evenings.

Everyone loves the fact that we have this gorgeous new location and they are looking forward to this event being a sign of more community activities to come, exclaimed Shore.

People Encouraging Parks & Recreation in the Community (PEPRC) is the supporting nonprofit and contributors will be provided the charitable nonprofit identification number upon request.

For more information on the Honey & Cheese Pairing Festival or the stores, please call Shirocos at 707-297-6452 or Piccolo at (707) 747-9321. Tickets are available at Shiorocs, Piccolo or the James Lemos Community Pool, or online at http://ArsenalSwim.com.

Annual "Evvie" for Excellence in Search Engine Study Papers Awarded

Boston, Mass. (PRWEB) May 2, 2010

Stephen E. Arnold of ArnoldIT.com, http://www.arnoldit.com, announced the Evvie “best paper award” for 2010 at Infonortics’ Boston Search Engine Meeting on April 26-27.

The Evvie Award went to Dr. David R. Milward of Linguamatics, http://www.linguamatics.com/, for “From Document Search to Knowledge Discovery: Changing the Paradigm.” Milward received a recognition award and a check for $ 500.

The paper presented covered using agile text mining to provide decision-makers directly with answers rather than searching sets of documents, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. The program outlined “how an agile NLPbased approach for discovering facts and relationships from free text can be used to leverage scientific knowledge and move beyond search to automated profiling and hypothesis generation from millions of documents in real time.”

Milward has 20 years experience of product development, consultancy and research in natural language processing. He is a co-founder of Linguamatics and designed the I2E text mining system which uses a novel interactive approach to information extraction. He has been involved in applying text mining to applications in the life sciences for the last 10 years, initially as a senior computer scientist at SRI International. David has a PhD from the University of Cambridge and was a researcher and lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He is widely published in the areas of information extraction, spoken dialogue, parsing, syntax and semantics.

The Evvie is given in honor of Ev Brenner, one of the leaders in online information systems and functions. The award was established after Brenner’s death in 2006. Brenner served on the program committee for the Boston Search Engine Meeting since its inception almost 20 years ago. He had two characteristics that made his participation a signature feature of each year’s program: He was willing to tell a speaker or paper author to “add more content,” and after a presentation, he would ask a presenter one or more penetrating questions that helped make a complex subject more clear.

This year’s Evvie was sponsored by Exalead. Arnold and ArnoldIT.com provide the trophy to keep Brenner’s push for excellence squarely in the minds of the speakers and the conference attendees. Presenting this years award was Eric Rogge, Exalead, and Liz Diamond, niece of Ev Brenner. The judges for the 2010 Evvie were Dr. David Evans (Evans Research), Sue Feldman (IDC), and Jill ONeill, NFAIS.

About Stephen E. Arnold

Stephen E. Arnold monitors search, content processing, text mining and related topics from his office in Kentucky. He works with colleagues worldwide on a wide range of online and content-related projects. The company’s Web site is http://arnoldit.com, and the Beyond Search blog is at http://arnoldit.com/wordpress/. He presented a full slate of programs about online search and Google at the Search Engine Meeting: http://www.searchenginemeeting.net/2010/speaker.aspx?speaker=StephenEArnold.

Houston Texas Consulting is a leading sales and marketing company in the business-to-business market. Indirect channels of marketing, such as TV ads, radio ads, and direct mail, have created a personal gap between the product and the business consumer. Through the use of courteous, professional, and service-specific presentations we create a positive and lasting impression. Our approach enhances brand loyalty, which translates into increased revenues and long-term success.

Most organizations are built on an every-man-for-himself model. Even in a large company, everything is a solo deal. We are different. We know that teamwork pays off. No one succeeds alone. We know that our success is dependent on finding and developing solid team players. That is why we focus our own recruiting on identifying those with the inherent qualities to succeed: discipline, commitment, character, and personality. Exeter, Devon, UK (PRWEB UK) 1 June 2012

This week sees the publication of dunnhumbys internal annual report, delivered to over 1900 employees worldwide in print and delivered in a mobile app.

The company chose Reactor Design in a competitive pitch with London design agencies. The brief submitted was for a 32 page report and a mobile app that delivered the report on iPhones, Android smartphones, iPads and tablet PCs.

Often, design and marketing agencies outside of London are rarely considered for prestigious projects with large companies. said Tim Mann, Creative Director for Reactor. Were pleased to have been chosen by dunnhumby. Though were a graphic design and marketing agency in Exeter, Devon, weve shown that the quality of our design and our work ethic competes at a national level.

The cross-platform mobile app delivers the annual report with a series of mini games designed to engage users with a personal experience, in tune with dunnhumbys ethic that the worlds experience of retailers and brands must be personal.

“Reactor surpassed all of our expectations in their response to our brief. They quickly got to grips with the unique dunnhumby culture and designed something for us that pushed all boundaries, but stayed within our guidelines. The creativity of the process stood out from start to finish and it was energising to work with such talent. As always seems to be the case with jobs like this, we ended up throwing the Reactor team some unexpected curveballs, and they dealt with these with a can-do attitude and complete professionalism. Feedback from our employees has been amazing and this is the best Annual Report to date.” said Steve Vinall, Internal Communications Director at dunnhumby.

Reactor have developed a number of mobile apps to date including a 3D thruster game, a shapes game for kids, and a trade show mobile application game called Crown & Glory for Wired Orthodontics (available free in the iTunes store).

Were very proud to have worked on this design project and look forward to taking on more projects like this in future. said Mike Saunders, Managing Director of Reactor. fiteBac SkinCare Attends 10th Annual Foothills Dental Hygienists Society Symposium in Gainesville, GA

Marietta, GA (PRWEB) August 29, 2012

The fiteBac SkinCare team spent this past Friday with members of the Foothills Dental Hygienists Society at their annual symposium in Gainesville, GA. The fiteBac team had the opportunity to meet dozens of dental hygienists who serve the northeast part of Georgia. fiteBac introduced the hygienists to its revolutionary new Germicidal Hand Softening Gel, a unique hand sanitizer that has found favor with many people in the healthcare profession.

The tenth annual FDHS symposium offered continuing education courses for its registered hygienists and also served as a forum for FDHS members to convene. The keynote speaker this year was Laney Kay, J.D., a renowned speaker on HIPAA and OSHA. Ms. Kay provided many updates on workplace safety, new technology, and infection control, among other topics, and was well received by the attending hygienists. The symposium also gave the FDHS members a chance to visit with vendors, including fiteBac SkinCare.

The fiteBac team spoke with dozens of hygienists, many of whom had previously seen fiteBac at the Hinman Meeting in Atlanta this past March and had wonderful things to say about the companys skincare products. The hygienists were given samples of fiteBac Germicidal Hand Softening Gel, a new hand sanitizer that combines a silicone base with a non-alcohol-based antimicrobial agent to sanitize hands, and the response was positive and enthusiastic. Many hygienists exclaimed over the soft feel of the fiteBac gela trait the gel has because of its silicone base, which binds smoothly to the skin. The hygienists were also excited to learn that applying fiteBac gel can actually improve the skins natural moisture barrier for hours at a time, even with hand washing and gloving.

Dental hygienists are such an integral part of the practice of dentistry, and its so important for hygienists to know that their hands can be sanitized and softened at the same time, said Dr. Kirk Kimmerling, DDS, co-founder and CEO of Kimmerling Holdings Group, LLC, the Georgia-based biotechnology company that owns fiteBac. “Our hand sanitizer makes dental offices cleaner, safer, and even more committed to hand hygiene practices, because its truly a joy to apply our product. The hygienists who came out to the FDHS symposium and met with us were so happy to learn about our product, and we were overjoyed to share it with them, as it is one of our companys goals to make the healthcare industry cleaner and safer across the board. Our hand sanitizer will help improve the health of hygienists and their patients, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to introduce ourselves to these wonderful members of the FDHS. We hope theyll take our product back to their dental offices so that every dental practice across Georgia will be making a re-strengthened commitment to hand hygiene.

fiteBac’s Germicidal Hand Softening Gel has garnered rave reviews from healthcare professionals and industry-leading evaluators and publications. Highly reputed infection control expert Dr. John Molinari of THE DENTAL ADVISOR recently conducted a product analysis of the fiteBac hand gel in which fiteBac was shown to exhibit high levels of germicidal activity. While many healthcare leaders enthuse about fiteBac because of its unprecedented sanitizing capabilities, the real difference between fiteBac and other hand sanitizers is that fiteBac applies smoothly, leaves hands feeling soft, and can improve the condition of the skin in a cost-effective manner, unlike so many alcohol-based sanitizers on the market.

The Foothills Dental Hygienists Society is comprised of registered dental hygienists from the following Georgia counties: Hall, Habersham, Banks, Union, Fannin, Rabun, White, Lumpkin, Stephens, Gilmer, Forsyth, Pickens, Towns, and Buford (City Only). For more information on the FDHS and their annual symposium, visit http://foothillsrdh.wordpress.com/.

About fiteBac SkinCare, LLC, and KHG: fiteBac SkinCare, LLC, is a subsidiary company of Kimmerling Holdings Group, LLC (KHG), a Georgia-based biotech company that has developed an antimicrobial platform intellectual property technology. KHG was founded in 2009 by cosmetic dentist Marietta GA, Kirk Kimmerling, DDS, and Dan Kearney. The two set out to create products that would “change the world, one product at a time.” Kirk and Dan first targeted bacterial issues in dentistry, knowing that solving those problems would lead to dramatic improvements in oral health and, more importantly, systemic bodily health. They engaged a team of highly accomplished chemists and scientists retired from Fortune 500 companies and researchers from major universities. In doing so, KHG has developed technology with several patents pending that has application well beyond dental materials and has exciting potential in medical, plastic, composite, coating, and other applications that are in various stages of development. fiteBac SkinCare Hand Softening Gel is the first product to be released under the fiteBac brand name. To learn more about fiteBac SkinCare Germicidal Hand Softening Gel, watch fiteBac’s Germicidal Hand Gel video. Win Free Pizza for a Year at the 7th Annual Home Slice Carnival-O-Pizza

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) October 31, 2012

Whether eating or standing, endurance will be the key to winning an entire year of free pizza at the charity fundraising event of the fall: the Home Slice Pizza Carnival-O-Pizza. The carnival, slated for Saturday, November 10, 2012, is a benefit for local nonprofit Austin Bat Cave and features 2 ways to win this amazing prize, courtesy of Home Slice Pizza.

Extreme Pizza Eating pits 10 carefully chosen contestants against one another to see who can eat the most pizza in 30 minutes. I focus on the quest for accomplishment says four-time champion Chris Floyd. Its something only a few people out there can actually do well.

The Hands on an Eggplant Sub (H.O.E.S) contest is exactly what it sounds like: combatants place a hand on a Home Slice eggplant sub and leave it there for as long as they can. Last person touching the sub wins. 2010 winner Lauren Shugart was touched by the camaraderie and in awe of the endurance it required, its all these different people who end up having a connection. And [the competition] showed me what I was made of.

The Home Slice Carnival-O-Pizza is at once a celebration of the art of hand tossed pizza, a seventh birthday party for the restaurant, and a charitable endeavor intended to give back to the community that has made Home Slice one of Austins favorite eateries. This years Carnival-O-Pizza will be held Saturday, November 10, 2012, from 12 to 7 PM. Austin Bat Cave is the Carnivals charitable recipient for the second year in a row. The 2011 Home Slice Carnival-O-Pizza raised over $ 20,000 for the local non-profit writing and tutoring center.

But waittheres more!

American Association of Poison Control Centers Celebrates 50th Annual Poison Prevention Week

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) March 14, 2012

The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) will join local poison centers and poison prevention partners across the country in celebrating the 50th anniversary of National Poison Prevention Week March 18 through 24, 2012, according to Dr. Rick Dart, AAPCC president.

Since 1962, the President of the United States has proclaimed the third week of March as National Poison Prevention Week to raise awareness about the dangers of poisoning.

Much progress has been made in poisoning prevention in the 50 years since National Poison Prevention Week was first observed, Dart said. However, there is still much work to be done; poisoning is now the leading cause of death from unintentional injuries in the U.S. ahead of motor vehicle crashes and guns.

Fifty years ago, 3-year-old Philip was rushed to the nearest hospital 30 minutes away. Tragically, he had found and drunk a bottle of rat poison. Although every attempt was made to save his life, he lived only a few more hours. Fifty years later, his sister Cathy Seifried of Texas is still grieving. According to Seifried, her brothers death had long-lasting effects on her entire family. I had good parents, Seifried said. They managed to function and go through the daily motions, but as a family, we were broken.

Today, Seifried focuses on supporting poison control centers. If our family wouldve had access to the education, outreach and treatment services that todays poison centers offer, we may have avoided the heartbreak and devastation caused by my brothers death, Seifried said.

Cathys story illustrates the importance of the treatment services provided by Americas 57 poison centers, said Debbie Carr, AAPCC executive director. Unfortunately, federal budget cuts in 2011 reduced funding for poison centers by 36 percent; further cuts will make it difficult for poison centers to continue providing those essential, life-saving services.

According to Carr, Americas 57 poison centers are committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of every American through poison prevention and free, confidential, expert medical services. Poison centers respond to calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week in order to help those who have been exposed to toxic substances. They also are committed to providing information about how poisonings occur and ways to prevent them.

In 2010, U.S. poison centers answered more than 3.9 million calls, including nearly 2.4 million calls about human exposures to poisons. About 75 percent of all calls to poison centers originated in peoples homes, and about 71 percent of the people who called with poison emergencies were treated at home following the advice of poison center experts, saving millions of dollars in medical expenses.

Since 1962, the third week of March has been designated National Poison Prevention Week and has focused national attention on the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them. Every day of this years 50th anniversary will focus on a poison-prevention-related theme:

Sunday, March 18 Poisonings Span a Lifetime
Monday, March 19 Children Act Fast So Do Poisons
Tuesday, March 20 Poison Centers: Saving Lives 24/7
Wednesday, March 21 Take Your Medicines Safely
Thursday, March 22 Home Safe Home
Friday, March 23 Poison Prevention Superheroes: Share Your Stories
Saturday, March 24 50 Ways To Prevent Poisonings

Philip has been gone for 50 years, Seifried said. I know there are many other stories just like his. For their sakes, please get involved with your local poison center in promoting poisoning prevention and the Poison Help number. You can make a difference.

If the unthinkable happens, its good to know help is just a phone call away, Dart said. Program your cell phone with the Poison Help number and post it near your home phone. 1-800-222-1222.

The AAPCC supports the nations 57 poison centers in their efforts to treat and prevent drug, consumer product, animal, environmental and food poisoning. Members staff the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 that provides free, confidential, expert medical advice 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year from toxicology specialists, including nurses, pharmacists, physicians and poison information providers. In addition, the AAPCC maintains the only poison information and surveillance database in the United States, providing real-time monitoring of unusual poisoning patterns, chemical exposures and other emerging public health hazards. The AAPCC partners with federal agencies such as EPA, HRSA and the CDC, as well as private industry.
